Lloyd Klein: Rising Star
(Photo below: Lloyd Klein, Spring 2004. Photo courtesy of Lloyd Klein)
Lloyd Klein, a true "Aquarian", has always been drawn to the creative process. His college
years were spent as a serious student of architecture with studies in Europe and internship
in the United States.
His appreciation and understanding of this field is evident in the structural elements of
his designs.
Having attended a Givenchy runway show of Haute Couture in his twenties, his fascination
with the art of building design turned into a dedicated romance with fashion design.
Without formal fashion school training, he began a self-study of the great fashion artists
of Europe and the United States developing a keen interest in the work of such masters as
Yves St. Laurent, Jacques Fath and the timeliness of American designer Halston.
His fascination became an obsession and in 1994 he presented his first Spring Summer
collection on the elegant stage at the Opera Comique in Paris. The following season,
he stunned the French fashion community by his unexpected appointment as Head Designer for
the exclusive Maison Mme. Grés.
His combination of intricate "grecco" fabric draping and sublime choice of materials,
continued the intrinsic Mme. Grés signature tradition. According to the French press,
he was one of the only designers at the time to truly master this difficult and precise
draping and cutting techniques.
After his five-season tenure at Grés he terminated his contract to continue his own
identity as a designer. Lloyd Klein continued by creating separate seasonal collections
ranging from Createur, Couture and Pret-a-Porter for his own House of Couture.
His collections have been presented in London, Milan, Russia and Asia.
In 1998, Klein set up new company headquarters in the US and in Sept. of 1999 he presented
his Spring Summer collection with 7th on Sixth in the tents at Bryant Park and launched
www.lloydklein.com. Ultimo, Tootsies, Martha's, Red Velvet opened their doors.
He returned again to NY's Fashion Week the following season with Fall-Winter `00/`01 and
Spring Summer 2002 in Los Angeles.
