Marc Jacobs: Jacob's Triumph

Sep 11, 2001/ FW/ --- Marc Jacobs may have spearheaded the New Wave revival in NY fashion, but he went back 10 years earlier to research his story for Spring 2002.

No more 80's power clothes; more like flower power if you will. A genuine smorgasbord of delicious shades, from pastels to candy brights and ingenious combinations like orange with lavender and pink coupled with mulberry.

Silhouettes reflected this change of direction with smaller shoulders and below the knee hems (not a mini in sight). The patchwork dresses would delight any hippy at heart. Halters abounded with piping or mini floral prints.

You might have thought you saw Mary Richards walking the catwalk as the tight poorboy sweaters and generously flared trousers were a staple of the 70's TV idol (in the past, Jacobs has remarked how much he admired the "Mary Tyler Moore Show").

And Jacobs didn't cut any corners for his men's collection. Floppy-haired models marched in narrowly cut suits, button-down shirts, and sportcoats, one-button and with vests. Trousers were narrow or bell-bottomed, some with stripes right out of Haight-Ashbury.

Almost all of the men wore sneakers, however, giving the garments a more casual appeal. Actually, the shoes were a huge departure from the stilettos Jacobs has used previously. Even some the women had sneakers on, others donned shoes with a more rounded-toe that is definitely easier on the feet than those pointy numbers he is recently famous for.

Yes, Marc Jacobs delivered a show that will turn the fashion industry on it's ear and will no doubt be the most-talked about collection in all of NY Fashion Week.
