NEW YORK, Sep 22, 2002/ FWD/ --- Like "That '70s Show," Marc Jacobs' Marc kids have grown up a bit and moved on into the '80s.

Gone are the grungy, murky mustards and rusts of last season's Carter-era collection, now it's all about electric yellows and shocking pinks, turquoises and teals.

Slouchy bellbottom cords have tightened up.

Now they're slim and tapered, fashioned out of faded black cargo fabric and riddled with zippers.

And paired with red or pink open-toe pumps and black ankle socks, the look could not be more timely, what with the current electroclash wave sweeping the New York nightlife scene.

One of Jacobs' greatest Marc achievements is giving the 20-something crowd some cool cotton-twill alternatives to the jean jacket.

In fact, the show, which was presented Thursday afternoon at the new Maritime Hotel, was a virtual sea of them; every junior editor sporting her army-green or cranberry-colored favorite.

And for spring, Jacobs did not disappoint in this area.

More of the bomber sort this season, many of the jackets sported short sleeves for a novel twist on the current trend.

And then there was the cotton gabardine take on the early-'80s "Members Only" jacket with shoulder tabs, which -- trust us -- every girl with a penchant for Gwen Stefani-style and New Order songs is gonna want.

Not to mention a slim pencil skirt comprised of rows of zippers that Karen Elson rocked with just the right attitude down the runway.

Though there was still a pervading shrunken-'n'-stripy aesthetic, the collection on the whole was considerably more grown-up than it's been in past seasons.

Take, for instance, a sexy sateen ruffle skirt - a sophisticated look that kept its easygoing Marc aesthetic intact when paired with a shrunken zip-front track jacket.

However, a conservative Peter Pan collar dress missed the mark entirely, appearing almost as though it had stepped out from his ladylike Marc Jacobs collection shown the night before.

But all in all, it was a refreshing collection for all those who adore Marc, and were looking for more than another round of big-buttoned, girlishly bohemian clothes.
