Matthew Williamson: Nu-Topia

London, Sep 22, 2001/ FWD/ --- Against a filmed background of Ibizan sunsets, beaches and clouds, Matthew Williamson remembered he was showing for Spring/Summer and stood out from the predominant beige of this week’s shows with a collection that screamed color, color, color.

In a change from Fashion Week’s usual curtained and cavernous venues, Williamson had picked a huge light-filled space in Victoria to show his Nu-Topia collection of wearable, sexy clothes to an enthusiastic audience, including the usual sprinkling of London socialites and celeb customers, including Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood’s daughter Leah.

His choice of fabrics and prints were more outstanding than the actual designs this season. Rainbow stripes were too hippie for our taste, but a new lace print was particularly successful, appearing in green on a white abbreviated mini, fuchsia on a white asymmetric skirt, and, best of all, a lilac version on a shocking pink silk wrap dress with long ties.

A gorgeous scalloped-edge gold lace decorated with sequins, butterflies and flower appliqués appeared in a cape-style top, camisoles and an extended tank worn over rainbow-striped knickers.

Rainbow dip-dyed lace tablecloths masquerading as ponchos weren’t a personal favorite, neither were the dated-looking appliqué jeans and minis, but no doubt they’ll have his Notting Hill customers reaching deep into their pockets.

FWD caught up with Leah Wood after the show. "Wasn’t that gorgeous?" she enthused, "I want those great jeans and some of those cute dresses. My only complaint is that I’ll have to wait until spring to buy anything – unless I can get my hands on some samples!"
