Michael Kors Q: Tell us about the new Celine store.
A: I wanted the stores to combine the idea of the streamlined with the warm and luxurious. It seems often we find only one extreme or the other. Either the look is opulent like a museum or cold, dark, forbidding and uncomfortable. There should be a sense of warmth with a spare take on elegance. Shopping in the Celine boutique should be an indulgence, yet a totally modern experience.

Q: How does this fit in with your design concept for the Celine line?
A: The same goes for the collection. The clothes have been about taking the idea of the wearable and casual but making them luxurious and indulgent.

Q: How will the boutique attract all types of customers?
A: Luxurious simplicity is the theme. In Bal Harbour, Celine becomes apparent of the international customer. The same clients will be drawn to the line regardless of where they are in the world. Bal Harbour is the absolute destination for the global customer, whether we’re talking about women who are in Florida year round or just visiting. These women are not only going out in Florida; they’re also traveling to Europe and Asia.

Q: Will you have as much hands-on experience here as you have had at your other Celine stores?
A: If I see a woman shopping, I talk to her and listen to her. This information is invaluable. For me, rather than plan in advance, I love to do impromptu drop-bys and Miami is a place I love to visit. In stores now, the Fall/Winter ’99 Celine collection boasts deep colors like scarlet, khaki, white, black and gray and lots of luxurious fabrics. In fact, a visit to the Celine shop is like a trip to the fashion candy store—where everything is made for those with Godiva-like tastes. Kors spends a few more minutes on I-95 telling me about the clothes…

Q: What is the Celine collection all about?
A: Celine is the only French house that was based on the idea of separates and luxury. This season, you’ll see Swavorski crystal encrusted cashmere dresses, Swavorski crystal encrusted pullovers and Swavorski crystal encrusted cotton jeans, double faced cashmere fur-trimmed pieces, handknit cashmere sweaters, silk pants, fur vests and fur coats. There are discreet jewels built right into the clothing as well as shoes, leather goods and scarves.

Q: Will the clothing selection differ at the Bal Harbour boutique than in other Celine shops?
A: Consistency to me and to anyone at Celine is important. We don’t treat any city or country like a stepchild. We sell the same clothes in Paris as we do in New York. Similarly, the idea of warm and elegant simplicity will carry through to our offices.

Q: What can we look forward to for Spring 2000?
A: My inspiration was all about sitting poolside in St. Tropez in 1980. The line features a combination of prints, watercolors, tie-dyes and denim. Bright colors contrast against a neutral base—like aquamarine, turquoise, water, grass, chartreuse, citrine, lagoon and sky. You’ll see matter jerseys symbolizing a return to movement and elastic waists turning attention to the silhouette, in addition to taffeta resin silk, double crepe cotton, leather and suede..
