DALLAS, Sep 20, 2005 / FW/ --- A modern day Scarlett O’Hara goes west and discovers that on the other side of the Mississippi River a whole other world exits that can be as charming as her home seems to be the premise of Michael Kors’ Spring /Summer 2006 entitled ‘South by Southwest.’
Sending contemporary interpretation of the costumes worn by the elite ladies of Charleston during the heydays of the South, like the layered white floor length skirt matched with a vest cardigan reaching below the hips and another mid-calf layered white dress paired with a lightly fitted jacket, then mixing it with the Indian-Hispanic tunics popular in the southwest, Michael Kors successfully married two very different cultures and created a very coherent collection.
Refusing to be part of the cliché prairie looks that is usually associated with the wide open range of Texas, Arizona and New Mexico, Michael Kors also brought in the chic style of the Northeast that he blended beautifully with the light snug fitting jackets and sheer frocks in the neutral palette of black and white.
To emphasize that it is the looks of today, he also sent in camouflage strapless gowns and one-piece swimsuits, the color combination a very popular choice among today’s youth.
To say that the collection is beautiful and pretty will not be enough because it is more than that.
It is also a statement on Michael Kor’s sartorial skills as he created volume by draping and layering while keeping the clothes light and summery.
And probably, the more important proclamation is the mastery of his craft wherein two very different muses were converged effectively to create a very directional collection
