A native New Yorker, (he calls Long Island home), Michael Kors studied at the Fashion Institute of
Technology. In 1978, when he was only 19, he designed and merchandised a collection for Lothar's in New York.
Three years later (1981), he launched his own collection under his own name, based on his vision of
luxury fashion - the use of ultra-luxurious fabrics on precisely-cut sportswear.
It was such a commercial success that he built his own stand-alone shop in Madison Avenue.
In 1997, Michael Kors joined Celine as Creative Director of its ready-to-wear collection.
In 1999, he won the CFDA Designer of the Year Award.
After 6 years in Celine, Michael Kors decided to concentrate on his own label. His last collection
for Celine was Fall 2004. It was shown in Paris on March 2004.
He continues to show his own label in New York.
