All American Preppy Chic
Michael Kors might be in Paris most of the year, yet he continues to thrive on his American
heritage.
For Spring 2000, Michael Kors dedicated his line to All-American Preppy Chic with his
showing of lavish lilacs, fruitful oranges, lime greens, bold blues, siren reds and lemon yellows.
He even revised "The Official Preppy Handbook" with a sexy spin on shrunken tennis sweaters and
golf pro-shop colors in one stroke (as in one runway show.)
The Ivy League rugby shirt became a body-skimming minidress, paired tongue-in-cheek with wicked
stiletto sandals. There was even a touch of humour when the models came out with upper-crust
floral caftans and turban towels, a parody of the poolside set at Palm Beach.
Michael Kors who has been designing since he was 19 was appointed as Head Designer for Celine in
November 1997. Although he has been offered other top design posts before, he had turned them
down because he felt no connection with those labels with what he was doing. When the offer from
Celine came, he felt a "comfortable rapport with the (design)house" and a strong connection with
his own tastes and attitudes and the direction that Celine was taking.
Michael Kors reputation as a designer is based on his use of luxurious fabric, precise tailoring
and sensual appeal of his creations. A graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology, he launched
his own line under his own name during the 1980s.
