LONDON, Feb 15, 2005/ FW/ --- You can leave it to the British to always do colour no matter what the season. Paul Smith has made some classic grandmother items now chic for the modern young lady.
The must have item for next winter are Paul Smith’s vibrant colour tights and leggings. Preferably in purple and orange, the tights look great with the simple minis and Mary Jane flats.
Another key accessory that was seen throughout the collection was his stripe neck scarves that resembled some of his famous ties for men.
Smith gained a lot of inspiration from his men’s collection for this current collection. The background floral print seen on his backdrop and runway is a direct motif that could be seen on one of his male cravats.
Many of the items seen throughout the collection had a direct vintage inspiration that can only be inspired by the famous vintage market girls who religiously attend Portobello and Camden markets for the hottest granny chic apparel.
Paul Smith has taken this concept to another level by designing these classic items in vibrant colours styled in a neo-classic way.
Plaids and floral prints are signature of the quirky British style. The collection was lightly layered with over coats and dainty sweaters and cardigans. The coats were very trendy in wool plaids and checkered prints.
Capes and detective double-breasted trench coats were great looks. Hems on skirts were set right above the knee with a direct seventies feel. Hippy kaftan maxi/mini dresses with bell sleeves were eye catching with psychedelic prints.
Tapered leg black denim will be another must have item that I have been waiting to come back in style. Turquoise and orange diamond argyle print sweaters styled with small tweed skirts and simple flat front jeans.
Gaining more inspiration from his male staple items, Paul Smith ended the show with Lily Cole wearing a superb loose fit blazer styled with brown leather pants and a must have wide brim hat.
