PARIS, Jan 31, 2005/ FW/ --- In a season where inspirations are very eclectic, Paul Smith chose good ‘ole rock & roll as the theme, sending a very polished collection on the runway that is bound to be a hit from Gen X, Y and the young baby boomers.
With the changing demographics, a designer has to find a common denominator among his clientele. And Paul Smith whose longevity in the business is a matter of fact found it in the music genre that all three generations have fallen in love through the years – rock & roll.
From snakeskin to plaid and from floral to solids, the Paul Smith gent is a budding rock star. Mixing graphic floral with stripes and checks, it was a kaleidoscope of color that can easily cheer someone during those dark winter months.
Big ties and cravats, and small gold chains to hold them or just to adorn the vest made them rock & roll dandies. Add a hat or two here and there; you have a man that is not only cool and hip but also part of the establishment.
It might sound incongruent, even a rebel without a cause. Yet, it all makes sense. After all, the first decade of the 21st century is all about change.
Changing values, changing geopolitical boundaries and changing attitude, but one thing remains the same – music! And the thread that bounds everyone together is rock & roll.
And that is the reason why Paul Smith is one of the most successful designers among his peers. He has the ability to find what binds everyone together, even only for a short time.
