DALLAS, Jul 13, 2004/ FW/ --- The 2004 Summer Olympic Games which begins on August 13 in Athens is nearing its fever pitch in Europe, so it’s not surprising that the most prestigious competition for athletes is represented on the runway, like what Paul Smith did last week in Paris.
Subtle as it maybe, the presence of the Greek gods was easily seen on the prints on t-shirts, writings on belts and symbols on bag straps, Paul Smith’s way of giving homage to the titans who inhabit Mount Olympus.
Apollo was seen on the bronze studded belt, while the Zodiac signs, named in honor of the Greek deities were represented in the golden threads of bands.
The British designer also celebrated summer, sending bright blues, yellows, and oranges on the runway. Stripes and big plaids dominated the collection, but there is a good representation of solids too.
But the designer’s best work is on the embroidered shirts, choosing to put embossed scallops on the placket, a little bit on the feminine side, but with the advent of metrosexuality, it fits within the boundaries of men’s dressing.
The Paul Smith gentleman is modern and upbeat. Though he might not considered himself a metrosexual, he is definitely an urban dandy who knows how to look good wearing his stove top pants and body-hugging shirts.
