Paul Smith is a self-taught designer, starting as a gofer when he was 18 and then a Boutique Manager at 20. In 1970, he opened his own shop and in 1976 started his own label.

Starting as a menswear designer, the company has expanded to womenswear and accessories. In almost three decades of existence, Paul Smith has remained an integral part of his company. He continues to design the clothes and still take part in managing the company.

Paul Smith's trademark is "Expect the unexpected!" There is always a surprise in his collections, which is a delight to both fashion editors and his clientele.

While a lot of British designers leave London to show either in Milan or Paris, Paul Smith has the best of both worlds.

He shows his womenswear collection in London (showing support to London fashion scene) and shows his menswear collection in Paris (because it Milan & Paris are where the action in when it comes to menswear.)
