Paris, Jul 1, 2001/ FWD/ --- Entitled Rebel Son, Paul Smith’s spring/summer 2002 men’s collection was a rich,
humorous, stylish homage to miscreants, which, being the serial party-going youngest son of a family of six,
was one of the reasons I loved it.
This being Paul Smith, these socializers are a gentlemanly bunch, who look laid back but never disheveled,
chic but never stiff.
Smith went for a roomy look this season, with wide-cut hacking jackets with slanted pocket flaps over easy
flat-front pants.
Every one of Paul’s rebels has a ruffled shirt in his wardrobe that he wears with country
micro-checks, dramatically colorful seersucker pants or feathery goatskin jerkins.
Staged in an underground basketball court of an intellectually-distinguished Left Bank high school fitted
with huge ballroom chandeliers and giant white globes, the collection gave one a most agreeable urge to rock
some joint tonight.
Paul’s mop-top models looked like they’d just crawled out of bed after an energetic night’s frolicking,
pulling on odd socks and tying their loose trousers up with woven leather rope belts or silk ties.
As Mick Jagger begged for "Just Another Night with You," 30 models strode out in a brilliant display of
shirt power, painted with huge Roman numerals, jazzed up with Italian lettering and huge dreamy polka dots.
As a finale it was about the best we’ve seen in Europe this summer.
