LONDON, Sep 22, 2003/ FW/ --- Spring summer 2004 for Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi, the London duo that make up the label Preen is street sexy and yet still ‘pretty’.
A multi-layered urban collection that sums up streetwear, not only in their reworking of classic 1980’s second hand items such as the bomber jacket and oversized shoulder bag, but through the choice of dingy colours such as grey, off white, black and beige with the occasional flash of blue, that are generally used for a more traditional winter palette.
Asymmetrical cuts, tucks and zips. Pants, jackets and tops were made up of various piecing together of fabrics that ranged from t-shirt material to vintage leather.
Elongated sleeves, long pants that have elastic ribbing at the ankles like sweats all part of the look designed and inspired by “glam-rock, David Bowie, and comic-strip superheroes,” as the designers told reporters.
Mini dresses with suspenders, garter belts, bra straps and hints at bustiers with their use of wide belts that sit under the bust suggest a lingerie influence, and despite the obvious reminder and unavoidable comparison to Helmut Lang and Rick Owens, the Preen show managed to hold its own.
Often authentic street style seeks oversize for comfort, Preen managed to take the street and strip it back to basics, presenting a women who for the up and coming hot season remains metropolitan ‘cool’ and sexy as she accents her assets and doesn’t hide them.
