NEW YORK, Sep 18, 2005 / FW/ --- If you’re thinking nautical and easy-going summer, then Ralph Lauren is the one for you as the quintessential American designer sent out relaxed silhouettes for Spring / Summer 2006.
But, if you are thinking jeans and t-shirts… well… belay that thought because though Ralph Lauren sent denim on the runway, it is not what you think it is.
Using patchwork and quilting, it’s not the usual denim look. Rather it is a fashion statement, something that sets you apart, though obviously you are still wearing denim!
The red & white and blue & white striped tank tops and tees was the obvious giveaway for the nautical theme. Yet it was the way Ralph Lauren deconstructed and reconstructed the naval uniforms that epitomized the subtleties in this collection.
Naval uniforms from all over the world had been done before, but Ralph Lauren’s take this season elevates it to iconic status as he used pin-stripe fabrics on jackets and skirts, while leaving the pants all white.
Another subtlety is the use of an Eastern motif in one silhouette. Unbeknown to many, it is actually the costume of Chinese junk traders of long ago. Seeing it on the runway, on a nautical theme is refreshing.
Mixing structured and fluid silhouettes, Ralph Lauren satisfied his very wide target market that wants everything – from girly looks to a more tailored silhouette. Shirtdress, bias cut skirts, body-hugging ankle-length frocks – the Ralph Lauren lady is ready for the Hamptons in the north and Hilton Head Island in the south.
There was a thin line between daywear and eveningwear as the designer sent out floor-length frocks and gowns. And though the L.A. factor, i.e. red-carpet dressing is very much present, it is still very easy to imagine that the girl next door will be sporting that look in a cruise ship, a formal dinner or a party under the moonlight in a Hawaiian beach.
