Backstage at Sandy Dalal's show, it is hard to pinpoint who is the fashion designer and who are the
models. With his exotic Indian looks and emerald eyes, Sandy Dalal can model his own designs on the
runway. It is hard to imagine that just over two years ago, he was a student at the University of
Pennsylvania and not even part of the fashion circle.
Born and raised at the Bronx, Sandy Dalal is the hottest menswear designer to
hit New York since Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren who by the way are also from the Bronx. Growing up
in Co-op city, with very conservative Indian parents, Sandy could easily have been a physician or
Wall Street broker. He chose fashion instead and what a media rush when he launched his first
collection!
In 1998, he was voted by People Magazine as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the world. That same
year and at 22, he received the prestigous CFDA Perry Ellis Award for Menswear. Fashion editors
have praised him for his choice of beautiful and luxurious fabrics and mix patterns of his menswear
lines. Definitely Saville Row!
For Fall 2000, Sandy Dalal Menswear featured striped slim suits, wool striped jeans and
striped ties. one tie was snipped straight across above waistband trouser height making it very
very humorous and very sharp.
He showed his signature paisley fitted shirts match with tan calf leather jeans. Notable outfits are
the crew neck rust cashmere silk knit top, the brown shearling short zip front jacket and chocolate
stretch cotton corduroy single breasted slim suit and the camel cashmere coat.
