March 25, 2002/ FW/ --- Backstage at Sandy Dalal's show, it is hard to pinpoint who is the fashion
designer and who are the models. With his exotic Indian looks and emerald eyes, Sandy Dalal can
model his own designs on the runway.
It is hard to imagine that just over two years ago, he was a student at the University of
Pennsylvania and not even part of the fashion circle.
Born and raised at the Bronx, Sandy Dalal is the hottest menswear designer to
hit New York since Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren who by the way are also from the Bronx. Growing up
in Co-op city, with very conservative Indian parents, Sandy could easily have been a physician or
Wall Street broker. In fact, he studied at the University of Pennsylvania planning to be something
else other than a fashion designer.
But the fashion bug that big Sandy Dalal proved to be strong. He left the university and chose
fashion. And what a media rush when he launched his first collection!
In 1998, he was voted by People Magazine as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the world.
That same year and at 22, he received the prestigous CFDA Perry Ellis Award for Menswear.
Keeping his menswear line in the U.S., Sandy Dalal also designed for Italian fashion house
Byblos' menswear line during the Spring 2002 and Fall 2002 seasons.
He only stayed with Byblos less than a year and last Feb 2002, after the Milan Menswear Fall 2002
shows, Onward Kashiyama signed the young designer to begin working on the men's wear line fo its
International Concept Brand (ICB) label, beginning with the Fall 2003 collection.
Sandy Dalal is in good company at ICB. Viktor & Rolf design the women's wear line of ICB.
