Oct 19, 2001/ FW/ --- At Sandy Dalal's showroom it was hard to pinpoint who was the designer
and who were the models. With his exotic Indian looks and emerald eyes, Sandy Dalal can model
his own designs on the runway or in this case, in this installation.
It is hard to imagine that in 1997, he was a student at the University of Pennsylvania and not
even part of the fashion circle. While everyone in New York's garment district were racking up
sales, he was racking up frequent flyer miles or frequent train miles travelling from New York
to Philly.
Born and raised at the Bronx, Sandy Dalal is the hottest menswear designer to
hit New York since Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren who by the way are also from the Bronx. Growing up
in Co-op city, with very conservative Indian parents, Sandy could easily have been a physician or
Wall Street broker. He chose fashion instead and what a media rush when he launched his first
collection!
In 1998, he was voted by People Magazine as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the world. That same
year and at 22, he received the prestigous CFDA Perry Ellis Award for Menswear. Fashion editors
have praised him for his choice of beautiful and luxurious fabrics and mix patterns of his menswear
lines. Definitely Saville Row!
