Womenswear at R. Scott French? I've got to see that!
Scott French left his multi-million dollar lingerie business so that he can design menswear. And he has
been successful in doing that.
His menswear designs are solid - meant for real men and not just for
the perfect Adonis that you see on the runway.
It's austere, but men are not usually peacocks, right?
Except for a few, the general male population go for the subdued look.
So, when Scott French launched his
now successful menswear line during the Fall of 2000, it was instant favorite.
For Fall 2001, Scott French goes back to his roots - designing for women. And from what I have seen, he
has not lost his touch. He definitely understands the woman's body! In a business where the adage, "Sex
sells," the designer went further and sold "sex appeal."
The Scott French woman is assured yet complex. There is not a lot of skin showing, but you cannot deny the
sexiness beneath the clothes.
The clothes are almost androgynous. And no, they are not peacocks neither.
They are the women of the new millennium - part of the workforce, and not afraid to have fun. You can
imagine the outfits being worn at work, and out to lunch, even an early dinner.
Definitely uptown chic
catering to the successful woman. Like their male counterparts, they lead a very busy life.
They're in control, but not manly. They're strong, yet feminine.
If the R. Scott French woman is feminine and strong, the R. Scott French Man is an achiever
who can relax and control his aggressive tendencies.
Short of sounding like a cliche, the male models exuded the confidence of the Millennium man -
poised to succeed and knows how to enjoy the good things.
Of course, without a tie, chances are he will not make it to the White House dinner guestlist.
But, do they care? The clothes are meant for urban living - you need to look good at every
occassion, from calling a cab when you just stepped out of your apartment and meeting those high-powered
clients for a meeting.
Ah, whoever said that this is the winter of dot com discontent has not seen this collection yet.
For the clothes are a match for the "business casual" that is the corporate ethos of
high tech companies.
Hey, even IBM allows "men without ties" nowadays!
