Call it a twist of fate. After getting her degree at Middesex Polytechnic, Sheila Maloney applied
at Central St. Martins for her MA. She did not get accepted, but another window of opportunity opened -
she became the production manager of Hussein Chalayan. She received hands on training instead of formal
education that seasoned Sheila Maloney in high fashion.
Fast forward three years with another twist of fate - she finally got a seat at Central St. Martins.
Upon her graduation (1999), she did not go back at Hussein Chalayan, but launched her own label
instead. She also made her debut at London Fashion Week on-schedule show for the Fall 2000 season,
alongside her former boss, Hussein Chalayan. Her debut collection was snapped up by Whistles. As
her business flourished, her former boss had to liquidate his company before the Fall 2001 London
Fashion Week.
Sheila Maloney's career as a fashion designer was littered with challenges, and she came out shining
through. "Printed pleating, subtle layers, detailed cutting and knitwear are her strengths."
(www.londonfashionweek.co.uk) Combine that with her fresh feminine approach
to fashion and you have a winning combination!

Sheila Maloney: Appliques Applications
By: Boyd Davis
The applique banners said it all for Sheila Maloney's show entitled "Surface." The
collection was dominated with appliques, embroidery and figurative stitching, most of
them left unfinished, giving it a raw edge.
Giving in to the transparent trend, the designer sent models to the catwalk wearing
flimsy blouses. Giving in to the polite society, the "appropriate" parts were
properly covered with sashes at times.
Dresses and skirt hemlines were just above the knee. Skirts and pants were paired with
V-neck blouses (usually deep or plunging). Pants came in two forms - slouchy and cigarette.
Sweaters and jackets has the obligatory turtlenecks. My favorite was the green down jacket
which was ski-wear inspired. If you close the buttons, its enough to keep you warm in the
Alps.
The whole collection was elegant and modern with a touch of nostalgia. The unfinished
embroidery and stitching made it very interesting.
Spring 2001
The Spring 2001 Collection of Sheila Maloney was entitled "Domestic Science." It should
have been "The Age of Innocence"
With lots of 1920s influence, this elegant collection showed a nostalgic summer 80 years in the
past. You can see the Flapper girl and also the schoolgirl with the tie blouses and A-line coats.
Stripes and solids dominated the collection, and colors ranged from white to lime green to pink,
browns and blacks.
