Backstage access is controlled for mainly due to security reasons and also because it is very crowded in there.

Backstage is usually a very small room, compared to the runway area. And the "crew" are all there - from stylists to make-up artists, to the staff of the designer, and of course, the designer himself.

You barely have enough for elbow room! So, it is really a privilige for the press (writers and photographers) to be invited.
