MILAN, Mar 6, 2003 /FWD/ --- Just when you thought there would be a zero glamour quotient in Milan, along came Christina Aguilera and saved the season at Versace Tuesday night.
Sporting a sexy little chiffon shift, Aguilera caused a stampede of paparazzi at Versace’s catwalk show that ended the Milan season with punchy, and ladylike, bang.
"The collection was all about Christina. She’s a great inspiration," smiled Donatella Versace backstage in between greeting magazine editors and fielding questions from MTV.
Just like Chelsea Clinton before her, Christina, who has been staying at the Versace Lake
Como family villa, enjoyed a makeover, albeit one that made her look like, well, Donatella.
With blonde tresses and high-heels with straps, several front-row wags dubbed the singer Mini Me.
Seated beside Christian Vieri, the ruthless Italian soccer star who is the local equivalent of Derek Jeter, Christina saw two -- Versus and Versace -- finely wrought collections that were some of the most posh and polished the house of Versace has yet produced.
"I was amazed by the clothes. They were so beautiful, so sexy. The corsets, the bustiers, the dresses, I loved them," shivered Aguilera.
The Latin chanteuse will be the star of the Versace fall ad campaign shot by long-time Versace favorite, photographer Steven Meisel, and styled by Brana Wolf, who did a wonderful job.
You have to hand it to Donatella, she’s gradually edged the house into a more refined look that still manages to combine the oomph we expect from Versace.
Versus, with big-haired blond vampire-like models, was perfect for the rock’n’rollaward
shows -- featuring aqua blue leather dresses, Basquiat graffiti printed minis, racy
leggings in piebald bold swirls of prints and some absolutely great suede boots trimmed
with gold.
Marking her return to Versace, Amber Valletta, still numero uno, sauntered out in a white
leather frock coat that managed to combine the sensual with the substantial.
Frock coats with Gothic touches, suede patch pockets and lots of punky and Western touches –
think straps, buckles and lots of leather strands – followed.
A long series of bustier dresses and some ghetto-fabulous posh punk furs made for a great
finale, where you could enjoy Donatella pushing her atelier.
A few multi-strip beige frock coats in mink with straight-jacket straps were great modern classics.
Looks like the ad campaign is going to be a lot of fun.
