MILAN, Feb 24, 2007/ FW/ --- After Donatella redefined the XX and XY for the Versace DNA and then went on the alphabet of style, she was ready to raise the Italian maison into another level. That she did this season, presenting Versace 2.0 to the whole world.
Today, we call the internet Web 2.0, because the world wide web as we knew it had evolved. When Donatella jump-started the Italian maison own revival a few seasons ago, the changes were subtle yet very noticeable.
The tailoring was more sartorial, the silhouettes were sharper and the total look was uber cool, especially when the new “V” logo was unveiled. The maison was poised to raise the bar onto itself. And last Friday, at the Teatro Versace, Donatella jumped not just one but several notches!
First, she redefined the way women dresses, i.e., traditionally, the clothes has to fit the woman. In Donatella’s new mood, the woman has to fit to the clothes! The concept is not entirely new. It is what is happening on haute couture. The groundbreaking move here is that Donatella brought it on ready-to-wear.
So, she sent sculptured dresses and skirts with hourglass silhouettes. Coats were cut boxy, tubular and trapeze. Bootleg trousers were cut slim, but did not constrict movement. It was a masterful execution of cuts and shapes where couture techniques were used.
It’s ultra modern and fresh. And without going into the whole science of genetics, let us just say that the XX chromosome of Versace just became dominant this season.
