Versace's Neat Nouveau

Milan, June 24, 2001/FWD/ --- Nobody can accuse the Versace family of pulling punches.
On Sunday in Milan, Versace staged its men's 2002 spring/summer collection in a new exhibition space replete
with faux marble floor, six huge chandeliers, 18-foot-high neoclassical doorway and a small posse of rock stars.
The musicians did their best to ignite new trends from the front row - dandy footwear. Ron Wood, Elton John and
the Rocket Man's significant other David Furnish all wore white leather shoes. But Boy George - who has gained
several kilos since DJ-ing the Bulgari party in Paris two weeks ago - wore black.
On the catwalk, the look was bright, graphic and edgily cut. The Versace man next year will wear baggy pants with
multi-pleats and tight little boxy jackets. Think the cover of Bowie's "David Live" album and you get the picture.
Boy George's soundtrack played Major Tom's edgiest hits throughout.
The collection contained plenty of must-haves: tight tops in graphic prints of soft pastels and brilliant black
damask jackets, to name a few. But the highlight was the eveningwear composed of jacquard tuxedos, with cummerbunds
enriched with fancy embroidery.
Nouveau to be sure, but very, very neat.
