Ultra-Sexy Versus

MILAN, Mar 6, 2002/ FWD/ --- One of fashion's central roles, and one that is frequently forgotten, is to make women look so sexy that their lover, or husband, will want to rip those fashionable clothes right off.

Judged on this basis, the finale of Donatella Versace's Versus Fall 2002 collection shown here Saturday deserves very high marks indeed: a dozen sumptuously sexy looks that made the men in the audience swoon.

Obviously, this is easily done when the women wearing the clothes are Gisele Bundchen and Carmen Kass.

But there was something particularly alluring about these finale outfits.

Composed of slinky, black slip dresses, with cutout corsets, crocheted skirts and lace fringes worn over red flower-patterned tights, they were a great statement about the modern woman's right to flaunt her sexuality.

"I loved the fashion. It was sexy, yet for real women," beamed musician Shaggy, sitting just down from Boy George, whose soundtrack boomed out into the courtyard of Versace's opulent via Gesu palazzo, where the collection was staged.

Using a boyish silhouette, Donatella also sent out some very fine intreciato coats in white fur and patent leather, plus cool, elongated pencil pants gathered a little at the seams, paired sometimes with trumpet skirts and fuzzy mohair tops.

But her big idea revolved around the hooded sweatshirt, shown washed out with cutout appliqués and day-glo lettering.

Not that everything was perfect in this collection.

There was far too much patchwork on the runway.

While some of it was creative and fun, like the denim long coats, many of the leather and fur combinations felt too much like vintage.

But then there was that ultra-sexy finale - and, as the green eye-shadowed gals slinked out for the evening, hearts began to audibly break, and so did the roaring applause.
