MILAN, Jun 25, 2006/ FW/ --- Women have been borrowing from the men’s wardrobe for a long time. What if the role is reversed and men borrow elements from women’s clothing. Well… that’s exactly what Vivienne Westwood did for Spring 2007!
In a seeming reversal of roles, Vivienne Westwood sent male models wearing skirts, though some of them can actually be called kilts, except that there is a pair of pants underneath, and the make up resembles that of a woman.
There are also ‘skorts,’ which in women’s terms is a combination of a skirt and shorts. But Vivienne Westwood chose to go more ethnic on this one, using elements of the Malaysian ‘malong,’ which by the way is male costume to create the ‘skort.’
Still, among what look like a gender-bending catwalk presentation, there are actually a lot of real clothes for real men. Suits in dark blue are cut slim, with straight leg trousers and comfortable suit jackets that emphasized the waist. But, instead of the requisite hankie, Vivienne Westwood used epaulets, something to look forward to when Spring 2007 comes around because they are actually collectible items.
Silk-screened long sleeved shirts with V-neck and collar, striped tees with the stripes embossed, crew neck shirts that are embellished with original prints, and polo shirts in gingham and pin stripes are good additions to a man’s wardrobe.
Hoodies were gathered at the hem and cuffs, with a gray one featuring zippers that opens on both ends all the way to the hood. This will be another items that young men will line up for next season.
Though Vivienne Westwood made her audience go on a treasure hunt on the runway, the collection is actually a treasure chest of some very covetable men’s clothing.
