Jan 3, 2002/ FWD/ --- Vivienne Westwood’s disciples in Berlin have taken the comeback of
mature models to an extreme – they had senior citizens model their designs for a calendar.
No stranger to subversion herself, the iconoclastic British designer is teaching at the
Fachhochschule der Kuenste Berlin, and students in her master class are the creators of
the clothes seen in the photos, which were shot by photographer Esther Hasse.
Werner Jahnke, who operates a home-care service for the elderly, said he came up with the
idea after he noticed older women donning Westwood’s clothes.
Each month’s black and white picture is accompanied by the model’s comment on their approach
on style. April model Antonia Rau, born in 1914, is the oldest to participate. May’s poser
Paul Kukuk, wearing a white suit and a cowboy hat and holding a guitar, says in his quote,
“Every night, I put my teeth on the bedside table… but never my style.”
Proceeds from the calendar, almost 2,000 of which have been sold, benefit an anti-violence
youth project.
The calendar can be viewed at www.jahnkepflege.de/kalender/.
