America's Next Top Model: Countdown Begins
By Mari Davis

DALLAS, Jun 18, 2003/ FW/ --- If you have been following the popular dramality, "America's Next Top Model" and saw the episode last night, then you know that there are only 5 girls left.

There will be two more eliminated and the top three will be left. Among them will be the winner.

Last week, Bronx native Ebony was eliminated. Ebony faltered in the 'TV commercial shoot' which is very important in a model's career.

According to Tyra herself, TV commercials made Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer and herself household names. What Tyra did not mention in the show is that TV commercials is one of the MOST lucrative modelling job, and it is where a model makes a lot of money.

Very few fashion models know that runway modelling is chump change for supermodels. For regular models, the best thing they can do is break even.

But runway modelling is very important because that is where a model is usually 'discovered' for an advertising campaign or a TV commercial.

The real money comes from TV commercials and being 'the face' of a product. Endorsements is the key.

In episode 4, when Ebony faltered in her acting and cannot say the lines properly, it was a sure sign that she was the next one who will be eliminated.

The lesson in Episode 4 - a model has to be able to act! And this explains the reasons why when most models retire, they go to Hollywood. Cindy Crawford and Lauren Hutton are prime examples.

The fifth episode was a harder call. The remaining six girls - Adriane, Elyse, Giselle, Shannon, Robin, and Kesse are all likeable, including their personality quirks that have been shown during the previous episodes.

This episode has two lessons about modelling - how to handle an interview and an 'action' photo shoot featuring Reebook, plus and Clinton Portis, Rookie of the Year running back for the Denver Broncos.

Riding on a horse carriage, circling around Central Park, journalist Steve Santagati conducted an impromptu interview with the girls, one by one. (This was after being coached by a publicist on how to handle the press.)

Elyse came out on top on this one, 'so natural' as Steve put it.

The Reebok photo shoot turned out harder than it looked. The girls had to dance, jump and act at the same time, while 'interacting' with Clinton Portis.

Elyse and Giselle shone on this one, both of them looking so natural as the photographer and the judges put it.

But it was Giselle who was eliminated! Reason: lack of self-confidence.

As Tyra Banks put it, Giselle was the "best in terms of movement" at the photo shoot. But Giselle's statement, "I think I looked like a dancer, not a model," showing that she was fishing for compliments changed Tyra's mind.

As each is shown, the 'secret life' of models and how to get to the top has been slowly unfolding in front of our eyes.

Whether it was scripted or just came that way, wherein Elyse, who has a tendency to be over-confident and show off her intelligence and Giselle who has problems with her self-confidence were the last two standing before the final elimination, the situation made the audience 'read behind the lines' on how important confidence is.

It was also pointed out that confidence is not equivalent to 'egotistical' and feeling superior.

Another issue that came out is 'weight' with Robin being 'plus size' and Elyse being too skinny.

As Tyra pointed out, the plus size market has changed during the past few years, and there is a need for plus size models. Janice, Beau and Steve rooted for Elyse, saying that a lot of superstars, including Linda Evangelista was a rail when she started.

Though the weight issue was not resolved in this episode, it will surely come out again, as the competition becomes stiffer.
