‘America’s Next Top Model’: What Does It Take To Make It?
By: Mari Davis
DALLAS, Jan 15, 2004/ FW/ --- For those of you who watched the premiere telecast of ‘America’s Next Top Model’ Season 2 on UPN last night, then you know that Anna Bradfield is the first one to be eliminated.
She refused to be photographed with only body paint and jewelry as clothes.
Her reasons were unclear. First it was because, “that thing is only reserved for my husband” and that she felt she was a role model for all mothers and housewives who want to be a model. And then during the interview with the judges she said that, “it was not because of religion, but she was just trying to be Christ-like.”
My question to Anna – “Where were you last season?”
The nude photo shoot cost Robin, a plus size model the competition. And Anna, another plus size model was eliminated because of it too.
Because the nude photo shoot was such a big issue last time with the contestants, the producers, i.e. Tyra Banks and Ken Mok, apparently put it early in the contest to weed out the contestant who will not do it. They were right!
What was shown on television is only a synopsis of the events that happened. The audience was only shown the highlights.
It can easily be said that Anna had her reasons. Yet, in the real world of fashion, the audience only “sees” 15 minutes of a designer’s hard work on the runway. Whatever problems were encountered in creating the clothes, model’s make-up and rounding up the accessories --- well, that story is never told.
The fashion world is about perception, and Anna was not able to make a firm statement during her 15 minutes. As a result, she lost.
For aspiring models out there, be aware – fashion is NOT porn. But, there is still nudity. Sex is very upfront, but always treated tastefully.
Posing for a porn magazine is not fashion, but posing for an artful photo shoot wherein a model is naked yet, “covered,” albeit by something else other than clothes is part of fashion.
One thing that aspiring models should remember too --- everyone in the photo shoot is a professional. They have seen what you have a hundred times, even a thousand times over.
Maybe it was Anna’s naiveté that cost her the competition. Or maybe it was her principles. Whatever it was, it did not gain her any fans.
Robin and Shannon were very firm and very clear why did not want to pose nude. Though Robin was let go, Shannon made it to the very last, coming out second in the competition.
It was really a bad break for Anna. She could have easily made it if she did the shoot. Jenascia Chakos was late for 2 hours!
Being late cost money and Jenascia sleeping over the commotion with 11 other girls is just unbelievable, but it happened.
And somehow, during the whole show, it has hard to feel sorry for her. She kept calling the other girls ***ches, when in actuality, it was her fault.
Ah, where is Adrianne, last season’s winner, when you need her. During one episode, she was in the hospital because of food poisoning. But she made herself get up, take a cab and do the make-up session for the judges.
Again, a question to Jenascia – where were you last season?
The judges praised Adrianne for what she did, even commended her for her dedication. Tyra Banks even advised Adrianne not to push herself too hard.
In the end, the judges rewarded Adrianne by making her “America’s Next Top Model.”
Jenascia should thank Anna for doing her a favor by not posing nude. It could have easily been Jenascia who was eliminated.
