Coogi Australia: The Last of the Mohicans

New York, Feb 15, 2001 / FashionWindows --- As a Star Trek fan, there a lot of times when I would
say, "If only I can say, 'Beam me up Scotty' so that I can move around faster." This is one
of those events when Scotty could have given us some help.
Richard Tyler and Coogi Australia were back-to-back in a sense. Richard Tyler had a show at 4PM in his
new house while Coogi Australia has a show at 5PM in Bryant Park. (I guess you have read about the spat between
these two Australian fashion houses regarding the models.)
If it was a logistics problems for the models, it was also a logistic problem for Visko Hatfield, our photographer.
How do you cover these two shows?
Choices...choices... Visko shot the Richard Tyler show on the runway, and covered the Coogi Australia show backstage,
catching the models as they were going back to the dressing room. (Is Fashion Week hectic or what?)
Now... let's discuss fashion...
Coogi Australia's collection is about fur and luxury. Seeing the clothes, you feel as if there was a time warp and
you were back when the west was wild, and the native Americans ruled the land. It was as if Alek Wek and Carolina
Ribeiro were cast as Pocahontas at the same time.
The clothes look gorgeous, although the models were hurrying as Visko shot them. Some of them have already
starting taking them off, getting ready for the next set of clothes.
On the runway or backstage, there is no denying that Jacky Taranto can work with a wide range of fabrics and
textures. The fur coats, the jackets, the clothes - they just spell conspicous consumption.
One thing to note in this collection are the boots worn by the models! They look sturdy and fashionable - and
could really be worn in the outback or the boonies of Alaska.
If the native Americans wore clothes as luxurious as they are, then Manhattan would have been more expensive than a
string of beads! The native Americans would have asked for more, let us say ... gold bullions.
