Rock Style at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
By: Staff Writer

NEW YORK, Jan 19, 2000/ FW/ --- The Metropolitan Museum of Art is showing an exhibit of rock 'n' roll clothes called "Rock Style".

Sponsered by (who else?) Tommy Hilfiger, the exhibit takes you on a journey of rock 'n' roll's 40 year history through clothes.

I recently visited the Met just for this and I only have one thing to say: "Wow!" (oh yeah, this is a "Rave", by the way.)

Everything about the exhibit is top-notch and not one stone was unturned; I didn't feel like anything was missing.

The exhibit is set up not chronologically but with similar styles placed together (like Sly Stone and Jimi Hendrix together with Lenny Kravitz).

This is a great idea and shows how artists from 25 or 30 years ago influence artists of today. Every outfit has a card explaining who wore what and a little bit of history behind the garment. Television sets showing clips from rock 'n' roll past (and present) play while music is heard in the background. There is so much going on but everything compliments each other and at no point does it seem like too much happening (unlike most clips on MTV). The sort of semi-dark neon lighting is perfect as well, making one feel like they are walking through an underground music club.

I practically bowed as I walked in as the first thing I saw were the Sgt. Pepper uniforms the Beatles actually wore (it was said that it was the first time all four uniforms were together since the album cover shoot in '67, but as it turned out, George's was only a repro). Elvis' famous rhinestone jumpsuits, David Bowie's Ziggy costumes, and pieces from Mick Jagger are all present, but what is fun are the pleasant surprises. Great selections from members of Parliament/Funkadelic, The Mamas and the Papas, David Byrne, and Bono. Which leads us to another great thing about the show which is that not only were there amazing contributions from the past, but also the pieces that are from the present. Of all of Madonna's things, the wonderful red kimono-inspired Gautier number for her "Nothing Really Matters" video was tops. TLC might not be everyone's bag, but their light-up costumes for "No Scrubbs" are very cool in person.

So, basically what I am saying is if you live in the NYC area (or not far) CHECK OUT THIS EXHIBIT! It will be running through March at the Met and then it will be off to Cleveland for a run at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's so worth a visit. One last wonderful thing about it is that there is not one item from Mariah Carey's closet. Smart thinking. But then, she's not really about style anyway.
