Behind-the-Scenes Look at Diamond Grading
DALLAS, Sep 6, 2001 / --- A new video from the nonprofit Gemological Institute of America (GIA)
provides a rare look at how the world's most respected gemological laboratory uses the Four Cs (Carat Weight,
Cut, Clarity, and Color) to determine the quality of a diamond.
For the first time in its history, GIA's
internationally renowned Gem Trade Laboratory has opened its doors to the public by allowing a camera crew to
film the Institute's high-security diamond grading operation.
Recognized worldwide as the ultimate authority in diamond grading and gem identification, GIA created the Four Cs,
the international standard for grading diamonds. In this exclusive video, "How GIA Grades Your Diamond Using
the Four Cs," viewers will learn how the quality factors that affect a diamond's value are established - and
then ultimately detailed on GIA's grading reports, which are considered by the jewelry industry to be the most
precise and trustworthy available.
"We are pleased to have this opportunity to give the public this close-up, in depth look inside our facility,"
said Tom Yonelunas, chief executive officer of the GIA Gem Trade Laboratory. "We hope everyone who sees it will
benefit from learning how our meticulous procedures in capturing each diamond's unique properties result in the
most accurate grading reports possible."
GIA President William E. Boyajian added, "GIA is a nonprofit organization, with a special mission to educate
and serve the gem and jewelry industry, but we also must serve the public trust. We think this informative
video can help the public understand how our research, education, and laboratory services combine to make
that a reality."
