Adeline André Adeline André PARIS, Jan 30, 2006/ FW/ --- Adeline André is a designer who has always liked using a touch of the unconventional when it comes to staging her shows and this time around was to be no different.

Using older models may seem shocking in the image conscious world of the body beautiful that is fashion but there was an underlying logic; how many girls of the age group who usually model these clothes can actually afford to buy Haute Couture?

More than this though, the collection, while modern in feel, wasn’t aimed at teenagers, nor those who wish to keep on pretending, and largely appealed to French modesty.

Cut largely in the bias, the silhouettes were as simple, free and fluid as one has come to expect from André while the prevalent draping needed to be seen in movement to be fully appreciated.

This was perhaps best illustrated by a beautifully flowing dress in pleated silk georgette which airy and transparent, seemed to flutter down the runway like a butterfly afloat on the breeze.

Another theme was for trouser suits or tunics which, oriental in spirit, were realized in wool and the Japanese paper like washi material.

Throughout, the liquid nature of the fabrics contrasted the square cut of the garments with the feminine curves of the wearer to produce an effect which was sexy without being revealing. This was a muted form of glamour; relaxed and wearable but glamorous none the less.

The early exits were all fairly sombre in color with the blacks and cream only livened by maybe a scarf or collar detail in turquoise or cyan. It was a relief therefore later when we were offered the brighter hues of yellow, lime or terracotta.

Draping had been used extensively and this reached its culmination in the finale. The ingenious construction of the silk georgette enabled it to be worn with the integral transparent cape serving as a cardigan, or, once the sleeves were lowered, a back and shoulderless cocktail dress.

This captured succinctly the ethos of the collection as it could be reserved or revealing depending on the mood. What more could a girl want if, after all, she might just change her mind.
