Amanda Wakeley Fall 2006: Back To Manderley
London Fashion Week Fall 2006

Amanda Wakeley LONDON, Feb 14, 2006 / FW/ --- ‘Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again,’ the opening line of Daphne du Maurier’s novel, ‘Rebecca’ is among the most memorable in twentieth-century literature. And it was from this novel that Amanda Wakeley based her 45-piece collection that is simply about the sophisticated woman.

‘[I was] inspired by a strong spiritied, mysterious and utterly glamorous woman with more than a touch of Du Maurier’s Rebecca De Winter. She lives dangerously, drives too fast, flirts expertly and dresses immaculately,’ said Amanda Wakeley on her press notes.

And as expected, the slim and sexy silhouettes, emphasizing the shoulder and the waist came fast and furious beginning with the sculpted trench coat in black, with puffed long sleeves and collar cinched with an obi-wide belt.

This is Amanda Wakeley’s modern version of Rebecca, without the sinister plot and cruel ego of the original character. In her fur-trimmed jackets, pencil thin or relaxed fit pants, and strapless cocktail gowns sculpted at the waist and hips, she is the woman of today – self assured and comfortable with her sexuality.

And that is the reason why she can easily wear those architecturally structured skirts and dresses by day, then shift without batting an eyelash to flowing gowns at night.

If the young Mrs. De Winter, the timid second wife of Maxim De Winter were real, she would be intimated by Amanda Wakeley’s vision of this modern woman. But, don’t have any fears, this ‘Rebecca De Winter’ is not what Alfred Hitchcock’s movies are made of.
