SYDNEY, May 4, 2005/ FW/ --- One trademark of the Mercedes Australian Fashion Week is the ‘Group Show’ wherein 3 or 4 young designers share the catwalk for one presentation.
This is usually done to save costs for the designer, as he or she shares the expenses for the production. It is a known fact that producing a fashion show is very expensive, wherein costs for the big shows in New York can run as high as US$250,000 to produce.
When a designer is just starting, finding the money to present a runway show is always a challenge, especially with today’s very tight business environment.
With Mercedes Australian Fashion Week offering the option of a group show, it gives emerging designers a chance to reach the press and buyers at a reasonable expense to them.
That said, let it also be added that holding a group show always need a precarious balance. With different visions and inspirations, the ‘message’ is often lost. Still, the organizers of Mercedes Australian Fashion Week manage to deliver a coherent show by ‘grouping’ designer that are more or less offering the same ‘fashion genre’ so to speak.
Yesterday, there were two group shows, ‘Ready-to-Wear 3’ and ‘Ready-to-Wear 4.’
Held during the morning, ‘Ready-to-Wear 3’ featured DORIAN HO, IT GIRL and JOVEEBA.
‘Ready-to-Wear 4’ was held in the afternoon with NOOKIE, STEPHANIE by Conley+Cranford and WATERSUN.
