SYDNEY, May 5, 2005/ FW/ --- Wednesday was ‘hump day’ for the Mercedes Australian Fashion Week Spring 2006 season. Though the event is supposed to last till Sunday, May 8, the last two days are reserved for visiting the showrooms.
Every fashion week has two facets, the runway shows and the showroom presentations. Both are important. Yet for the fashion press, the runway show schedule is the one that makes fashion week hectic because of there is a set time for each show.
Showroom presentations are relatively ‘leisurely,’ in the sense that although there is a time when one has to make the visit, one can make an appointment instead of being there at a set time.
So, Wednesday, there was certain lightness amidst all the excitement, knowing that we are already in the middle of the week.
The group show, ‘Ready-to-Wear 5’ featured CARAVANA, ED & BEK and HANSEL, with a very avant-garde look at fashion.
Designed by Cathy Braid & Kirsten Ainsworth, Caravana was derived from the name of an eastern inn in Central Asia on the Silk Route where camel caravans rest overnight.
Ed and Bek is the brainchild of Edwina Lye & Rebekah Golsby-Smith, and based in Sydney.
Hansel is designed by Central Saint Martins grad and Singapore-based. Jo Soh.
Kit Willow Michelmore, designing under the label WILLOW
(photo at left) returns on the runway with the old world glamour mixed with modern fashion suiting that has already become a signature style for the brand.
