June 5, 2002/ FW/ --- On its 40th year, the Council of Fashion Designer of America held its yearly fashion awards at the New York Public Library Monday night.

It might have been a pared down Awards Night (only 450 guests compared to last year's 2000), but the glitz and glamour are still there, plus two TV stations which covered the show.

Among the famous faces who attended are Penelope Cruz, Hilary Swank, Christina Ricci, Helena Christensen, Lauren Bush, Carolyn Murphy, and Sen. Hillary Clinton.

Also in attendance were other luminaries from the fashion and entertainment worlds, including Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, Lauren Bush, Bridget Hall, Julianna Marguilies, Marisa Berenson, Penelope Cruz, Christina Ricci, Ali MacGraw, Lauren Hutton, Alan Rickman, Alicia Silverstone, Linda Evangelista, Shalom Harlow, Helena Christensen, Hilary Swank, Iman, David Bowie, and more than 100 members of the CFDA.

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Mayor Michael Bloomberg also attended.

And the winners are:

  • Womenswear Designer of the Year: Narciso Rodriguez
  • Menswear Designer of the Year: Marc Jacobs
  • Accessory Designer of the Year: Tom Ford for YSL
  • Perry Ellis Award: Rick Owens
  • Eugenia Sheppard Award (Fashion Journalism): Cathy Horyn
  • Creative Visionary Award: Stephen Gan
  • International Award: Hedi Slimane for Dior Homme
  • Lifetime Achievement Award: Karl Lagerfeld
  • Lifetime Achievement Award: Grace Coddington
  • Fashion Icon Award: CZ Guest
  • Eleanor Lambert Award: Kal Ruttenstein
  • The Awards, which annually honor fashion's most prominent and established designers, journalists, and creative visionaries for their originality and leadership in American fashion, took place during an intimate event at The New York Public Library.

For the first time ever, the evening was co-chaired by three prominent CFDA members: Oscar de la Renta, Diane von Furstenberg, and Michael Kors.

The star-studded evening was sponsored by Swarovski, the internationally renowned purveyor of cut crystal, who collaborated with lifestyle designer Colin Cowie to incorporate Swarovski crystals into the dramatic decor.

Swarovski added an elegant sparkle to the occasion with over 1 million crystals including shimmering crystal stones the company designed exclusively for Christian Dior in 1956, and also provided a crystal-studded journal as a gift for each guest.

The menu for the evening was created by Rocco DiSpirito, owner/chef of New York's Union Pacific restaurant, and prepared by Tentation.

Vidal Sassoon and Guerlain provided hair and make-up, respectively, for the awards nominees and presenters.

The 2002 CFDA Fashion Awards also marked the 40th anniversary of the CFDA, which was spotlighted with video montages highlighting seminal events and personalities from each of the last four decades.

Each decade was introduced by a person closely identified with the time period -- David Bailey, the photographer who inspired Blow Up, and Marisa Berenson introduced the 60s; Ali MacGraw introduced the 70s; Shalom Harlow introduced the 80s; and Fran Lebowitz introduced the 90s.

The future of fashion was represented by Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCullough of Proenza Schouler, the young design duo and winners of this year's Parsons School Designer of the Year Award.

If you want to catch the Awards Ceremonies on TV, tune in at New York Metro TV at 8:00PM Wednesday, or nationally on WE/Women's Entertainment on Saturday at 8:00PM Eastern/Pacific.
