NEW YORK, Aug 29, 2003/ FW/ --- Designer Andres Throckmorton Stickney fits today's
global demographics to a T. Born in Guatemala and raised throughout the world,
Andres’ family’s involvement in world health issues has given him many exotic experiences.
So, it's not really surprising that he gets his artistic inspiration from his
eclectic life as a global citizen.
DRES, a label which he launched on October 2002 started with an accessory line of
innovative rubber belts, bracelets and colorful animal handbags and coats made from
assortment of cute animals.
It then expanded to include shoes, eyewear, handbags, belts and jewelry.
Hence, a ready-to-wear collection is a natural progression for the Skidmore College
graduate witha dual degree in business and fine arts.
Andres Stickney started his design life as a graphic artist. And this shows in his
ready-to-wear collection which incorporates industrial design, adding a tough edge to
soft feminine details.
He started designing clothes after taking additional classes at FIT, creating a
small collection that debuted in a runway show of underground designers in the
chic artist community of Dumbo, Brooklyn.
That collection gave Andres the break he needed. It landed him a design job at
Ralph Lauren's Purple Label.
Andres, who was brought up moving every few years continues to have itchy feet. Once
he felt that he had learned what he needed at Ralph Lauren, he took the prestigious
design position with TSE, working with the avant-garde, highly acclaimed designer Hussein
Chalayan and Richard Chai, former head designer for Marc Jacobs.
In addition, Stickney collaborated with stylist Lori Goldstein to develop a novelty
accessory collection for TSE.
Andres finally found his wings in October 2002. He left TSE and created his own designer
label, DRES.
His design philosophy is 'individual freedom,' to be who you want to be, to live life as
you want to live, unrestricted by cultural barriers.
When asking Andres why he chose fashion as the artistic medium, he casually states
"celebration and communication."
