PARIS, Jul 5, 2002/--- Morsels of fresh coconut and juicy pineapple, along with
smooth frozen drinks, inspired thoughts of tropical fantasies that Dries Van Noten
successfully created in his men’s spring/summer 2003 collection.
The Belgian designer even presented the collection on an intimate island strip on the Seine,
completing the Bermuda-like atmosphere -- Bermuda being where one imagined next summer’s
Dries man habitats.
Using a variety of textiles -- tweeds, cotton, linen -- this lightweight bohemian collection
was simultaneously tailored and fluid.
Van Noten managed to execute a sharp and clean unkempt collection.
The pants were cut just above the ankle, suitable for island-life, as were the breathable
open shoes.
Pin stripes and regular stripes gave this loose collection just enough structure.
Shirts were lightly embellished with colored embroidery and comfortably unbuttoned and
uncuffed.
For hot days, Van Noten suggested ditching the shirt for a bright green or red vest instead.
Loose belts were slung around the models’ tight hips, as were chains for things such as keys.
In fact, this man was barely without at least a couple of keys, suggesting that he was the
tenant of the most laid-back apartment building on the island.
Slim silk scarves made for a good alternative for the tie, and added just enough color.
Knits were also a key ingredient, although some of the cardigans looked like they had been
sitting in Grandpa’s mothballed attic.
But sweaters aside, Dries Van Noten gave the fashion crowd a nice island escape in the middle
of Paris on one exquisite night.
