DALLAS, Jul 18, 2006/ FW/ --- Fashion’s love affair with the 1980s continues with the menswear Spring 2007 season. Perhaps, its because ‘Miami Vice,’ a 1980s hit TV series has just been remade into a movie. Or better yet, maybe that decade never left us with ‘Dallas’ and ‘Dynasty’ still playing on reruns. No matter what the reason is, Dries Van Noten went back two decades to spruce up men’s dressing for the 2000s.
Boxy coats and suit jackets dominated the collection. Relaxed fitting and linear, they usually have shoulder boards giving it a paramilitary look.
The multiple variants of the jackets whether short cropped or reaching below the hips featured belts made of the same fabric and adorned with pockets, just like the ones during the 1980s.
But, nothing looked vintage. The sharp tailoring made everything look very contemporary.
Trousers have a very relaxed fit, tapering slightly towards the ankle. The waist was defined again with the sewn-in belts. And since shorts is definitely the look of the Spring 2007 season, Van Noten made sure that they follow the silhouettes. Created in solids and bold floral prints of yellow, pink and lilac, double-straps act as snaps to close the beltline.
Blouson jackets also made their appearance. Zipped in front and gathered at the sleeves, they came collarless or with a collar. With a very casual attitude, it’s a ‘go-anywhere, do everything’ garment.
The color scheme is predominantly neutral – black, white, gray and beige. Colors also made their appearance in the guise of prints and embroidery.
All right, maybe Larry Hagman as J.R. Ewing might not find this collection attractive because it might be too fashion forward for him. But, if rumors are true, and that Brad Pitt will be J.R. in an upcoming re-make of ‘Dallas’ as movie, the megastar will definitely find this collection very enticing.
