SYDNEY, May 10, 2003/ FW/ --- Twenty-four year old Gabriel Scarvelli debuts his label
at Mercedes Australian Fashion Week this season.
But, a lot of the work he has done had been seen on the catwalk via Collete Dinnigan,
Terry Biviano, Sass & Bide, Bare and Tigerlily.
So, it's not really surprising that the young designer showed maturity and understanding
of fashion though he still has a freshman status.
A self-confessed fan of early Hollywood glamour, Scarvelli sent an elegant, almost
theatrical collection that was pure Hollywood magic.
The models looked like nymphs from Shakespeare's 'Midsummer Night's Dream' though they
are dressed in contemporary evening wear.
Memorable piece is a white minidress which was backless and the body-hugging top was
held by spaghetti straps. The layered skirt was made up of strips of fabric cut like leaves.
The look it created - timeless!
Using old world laces, fabrics, beads, crystals and stones, Scarvelli came out with
truly unique pieces that were both familiar and new.
It's easy to see the references to the 1920s, or even the movie where it came from.
But it was not derivative. In fact, one thing you can say about Gabriel Scarvelli
is that he is an original.
Though he also gave in to trends like the low-waist, hip hugging satin pants, it was
not done to make the collection commercial.
Rather, it was put there because it made sense!
With his debut collection, Gabriel Scarvelli just made himself THE designer to watch
from down under.
