Elegant, Fluid Jewelry Crafted From Gold and Diamonds

NEW YORK, Apr 11, 2003/ FW/ --- She’s been a dancer and a successful fashion model who
walked the runways of the fashion capitals of Europe. Now Sofia is taking the world of
jewelry design by storm.
The recent debut of her first collection, called Tenthio, at the JA New York jewelry
exhibition in New York City, shows every indication that once again Sofia is a rising star.
The Tenthio collection uses the finest 18K yellow and white gold, and white and colored
diamonds to articulate Sofia’s unique vision of the world.
Featuring earrings, necklaces and rings, the Tenthio (which means “ten gods” in Greek)
design philosophy is about being free, experimental and open to life.
Sofia explained, “My jewelry is best described as positions, suggesting various poses,
images and emotions. The forms I present are like platforms or stages on which events
might happen.”
Sofia studied jewelry design at the Fashion Institute of Technology, at Le arti orafe
and Fuji Studio in Florence, and has apprenticed in the top jewelry workshops of Milan.
Her creative inner life has also been a teacher.
“I am inspired by the past, present and future, by different cultures and wisdoms,” she said.
“I am influenced by my travels, dance movements, emotions and gestures, color, numbers,
photographic images and many other forms of art. Music also plays a big role in my art,
as it alters my moods.
“When I design, I think about people. I want to record memory and movement with my jewelry,
and to absorb feelings in order to give happiness.”
Sofia’s style is truly special. She carves flowing lines into the metal and fills them
with colored enamel to create abstract images that allow for interpretation by the viewer.
For an example of her signature style, look at the Amethistos ring, in 18K yellow gold
with white and colored diamonds and an amethyst as the central stone – flowing, abstract
and very contemporary, yet evoking a feeling of the past as well.
Petalutha is a ring, pendant and earrings is in 18K yellow gold with white diamonds.
Another style is called Levant – a pendant and earrings in 18K yellow gold with both
white and colored diamonds with a design that evokes the curves of a woman’s body.
Platypus and Palette are more playful – a ring-and-pendant and ring, respectively, that
use large and small white and multi-colored diamonds 18K yellow gold to evoke their namesakes.
Dervish, Lavendula and Laurasia are pendants in 18K gold with white and colored diamonds
that subtly, but powerfully, reflect the Mediterranean culture that had a profound influence
on Sofia.
Sinuous lines and the contrast of gold, diamonds and black enamel lines give these pieces
their distinctive looks.
The Frescoe set of pendant and earrings in 18K gold with white and colored diamonds gives
the modern impression of an ancient scarab. And Paisley Gaze – earrings, ring and pendant –
feature 18K yellow gold, white diamonds and blue enamel to evoke the signature paisley shape.
The Tenthio collection by Sofia is available through her showroom, located in New York City.
The pieces in the collection range in price from $1,800 to $3,400.
