Julien Macdonald Throws A Party

London Fashion Week Fall 2006

LONDON, Feb 15, 2006/ FW/ --- Julien Macdonald remains perhaps the biggest name on the London calendar and in terms of throwing a party he certainly lives up to the hype. Last night, at his catwalk preview, the celebrities were out in force and the people watching was as much fun as the show.

Fun it was too if only in that the glamour was put into overdrive and all present could forget any troubles they arrived with and let a wave of lavish excess wash over them, leaving them shiny and new.

It wasn’t just Paris Hilton, who took to the runway alongside fashion heavyweights such as Erin O’Connor and Elizabeth Jagger. Nor was it the $3 million Grisogono diamond necklace or the shower of golden glitter which rained down on the finale but rather all of these things which when taken together can only add up to a McDonald show.

The outfits may have been a little much for some but it was pure theatre and what made it so riveting was the feeling that at any moment it could all degenerate into pantomime.

Paris gleefully paraded down the catwalk in yet another barely there dress, seemingly oblivious to the fact that her robe was shedding its sparkling crystal beads at a worrying rate. What some in the audience had realized, even if she hadn’t, was that in a moment she would be turning around and heading back along a runway that couldn’t be more perilous if someone had covered it in banana skins.

Luckily for her she managed to negotiate the obstacle with the help of some well-positioned assistants and the confidence that comes from knowing that Daddy is super rich. There were some there who seemed mildly disappointed that she finished with her dignity so completely intact but there was twist.

The collection was awash with fur and so the anti-fur lobby determined to have its say. On arriving at the after-show party Paris and Macdonald had barely left the safety of their limousine before they were attacked with flower bombs by a well-to-do middle-aged lady claiming allegiance to PETA – People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

To their great credit the pair took it with humour and brushed it all off - literally as well as metaphorically one can only assume. Perhaps for his detractors though, Macdonald’s greater sins were the diamante details he couldn’t help adding to the coats in question. What did they say about diamond and fur?
