Alicia Lawhon: Too Many Dots
By Lael Ward
LOS ANGELES, Apr 7, 2003/ FW/ --- Dots. Far, far too many dots. That's the first and foremost thing on every attendee's mind when thinking about the Alicia Lawhon Fall 2003 collection.
Bypassing the standard blacks and browns of most fall collections, Alicia Lawhon went with bright pinks and purples with the occasional olive green for the first portion of her collection.
In clothing that brought to mind clowns, the models, wearing short white blonde wigs, showed off leggings with large multi-colored polka dots and knit micro mini skirts and dresses with both slits and at least one large dot per item.
The second portion of her show toned down a little and featured a black and white dress with a two tiered row of lace at the bottom that was much more conservative and pretty. However, even this dress featured a large white dot centered on the back.
There were a few men's coats thrown into the collection this year as well. No matter how fine a style certain coats were, the sequins sewn into the coats were of a style even some of the more progressive men would hesitate to wear. One coat was a military green with a gold and silver sequin butterfly on it's back.
This was one collection that just didn't fly.
