Collins & Tyler Inject Old-World Glam Into L.A. Fashion Week
Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall 2003
By Jennifer Sklar

LOS ANGELES, Apr 8, 2003/ FWD/ --- Cornell Collins and Richard Tyler raised the bar with their fall shows Friday at the Standard Downtown in Los Angeles. Each had a fresh, unique approach to the season and both gave the audience what they wanted: attitude and glamour.

Collins took a retro turn with a collection full of black, white and pink. High-neck dresses and geometric-print tops were paired with "Valley of the Dolls"-esque bouffant hair and wild eye make-up. Think Jackie Kennedy, clad in her Camelot best, going for a roll in the hay.

"I thought it was so beautiful and so feminine," said jewelry designer Ericka Courtney, who lent her baubles to Collins for the show. "I love the hair, I love the clothes, and I love the getup!"

The most breathtaking moment came with a floor-length satin evening coat that resembled layer upon layer of silky swirls of white icing that Grace Kelly would have donned today. The crowd gasped and broke out into thunderous applause with its debut, and many gave the designer a standing ovation when he strolled the catwalk at the end of the show.

Later that evening, the tyler. and Richard Tyler couture show was quite a scene. Heiress Nicky Hilton sat front row to cheer on sister Paris, who modeled three ensembles, while Mark Walhberg, Wesley Snipes, Angela Bassett and Aussie actresses Rachel Griffiths and Sarah Wynter sat nearby. With so much schmoozing to do, no one seemed to mind that the show was almost an hour behind schedule.

The tyler. collection offered a funky floral tapestry 3/4-length coat, paired with the season's hot skinny pant in denim. An awesome tangerine cord suit caused quite a stir, while the tobacco-colored leather jacket made mouths water. Who wants to bet Madonna and Gwyneth will be sporting one soon?

Tyler's couture collection started with military-inspired dresses, skirts, jackets, and several paisley pieces before working up to the red carpet-worthy gowns that put Tyler on the map. The dresses ranged from wild to romantic -- the moss silk chiffon bias stitch gown and its forest green counterpart were beautiful, while the multi-color velvet tuxedo was imaginative and bold. An iridescent, stitched-back drape gown was as glamorous as it gets, and will certainly inspire Hollywood's A-list women to stop by Tyler's studio.

"I am a huge fan of Richard's," said model and MTV personality Molly Sims. "His clothes are classic and beautiful and he always has that one perfect thing." Or, in this season's case, many perfect things.
