MILAN, Feb 21, 2005/ FW/ --- When you enter the Fiera Milano, the main venue of the Milan Womenswear Show, you are treated to a ‘walk of fashion’ wherein fashion photo editorials and ads are plastered on the floor and wall.
So, literally, you are walking on fashion, an apt tribute to Italy’s largest city and the country’s fashion capital, rivaling Paris and New York.
For about 20 meters, the passerby is treated with these photos and a multi-media presentation featuring top designers who are showing their latest collections.
Outside the Fiera, where temperature was still hovering at freezing while snow flurries had been falling the whole day, it is also a ‘walk of fashion,’ though this time, it is more figurative than literal.
Wearing their winter coats, scarves and hats, the Milanese still manage to stay chic and fashionable! And I’m not talking about the fashionistas here. I’m talking about the everyday people of Milan going about their daily lives.
You see them riding the tram, driving or crossing the street. Inside their thick winter coats that are either made of fur, filled with down feathers or manufactured with a high tech fabric, one would see glimpses of color, a sure sign that once they take off their coat, you will find spring time.
Yet, you don’t need to see what is underneath the winter coats, because even with all the layers of clothes, the Milanese looks good. Their scarves and hats match their boots and accessories. The Milanese takes care when they dress and it shows.
Inside the fashion shows, the scene is very similar and raised a notch. After all, they are members of the fashion flock from press to buyers.
It might be winter outside, but it is springtime inside as you see the fashionistas sporting the latest collections that are hitting the stores this month. You see them in all shapes and sizes, but let me tell you one thing – the press and buyers attending the Milan shows as a group are the best dressed!
Maybe it’s the season, maybe it’s Milan… but I bet it’s the latter because to paraphrase a saying that has its roots in Italy too, ‘When in Milan, do as the Milanese do, immerse yourself in fashion.
