Fashion's Heart Is A Red Dress
New York Fashion Week Fall 2003
NEW YORK, Feb 3, 2003/ FW/ --- What does Angela Lindvall, Fern Mallis, Donna Karan,
Susan K. Bennet, MD, Marsha Oakley, Joan Hamilton and Bonnie Brown have in common other
than fashion?
They all support The Red Dress Project of the Heart Truth campaign.
Though very few people might know, heart disease is the #1 killer of women. The Heart
Truth, through its Red Dress Project puts the issue of heart disease in the national
spotlight through a partnership with the fashion industry.
The Heart Truth is a national awareness campaign on women's heart health sponsored by
the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI).
Its primary message: Heart disease is not just a man's disease - it's the #1 killer of
women.
The campaign pairs the message with an arresting visual - the Red Dress - as the national
symbol for women and heart disease.
The Red Dress is the heart of the Red Dress Project debuting at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week
during the American Heart Month, Feb 7-14, 2003.
This groundbreaking project, supported by Mercedes-Benz USA and 7th on Sixth launches the
red dress icon to raise awareness of women's risk of heart disease.
You might ask, why a red dress as the icon?
The Red Dress has proved to be a positive image to convey heart disease awareness targeted
to women.
Angela Lindvall is the model for the Red Dress Project, wearing a dress designed by
Donna Karan and shot by photographer David LaChapelle.
Part of the launch of this national campaign is the 'Red Dress Collection' exhibit at the
Bryant Park tents during fashion week.
Leading fashion designers - Chaiken, Tommy Hilfiger, Carolina Herrera, Calvin Klein,
Luca Luca, Nicole Miller, Vivienne Tam, Carmen Marc Valvo and a lot more - contributed
a red dress from either vintage or current collection to the exhibit.
Mercedes-Benz presents the Mercedes-Bernz Fashion Week magma red C320 Sports Coup to be
displayed as its 'red dress' at Bryant Park.
In addition, the display area features an illustration of Angela Lindvall, Cover Girl,
wearing Donna Karan red dress photographed by David LaChapelle.
After MBFW, the Red Dress Project will make a Washington D.C. debut at the spring gala
of the Society for Women's Health Research. A national tour of the Red Dress Project is
also in development.
