DALLAS, Apr 18, 2004/ FW/ --- In a very eclectic New York season, spotting trends was harder than usual, and that’s the bad news. The good news is the trends that emerged are so great looking that it’s hard to wait for the next six months so that we can get our hands on these beautiful clothes.

Going Tweedy

Wardrobe staple tweed has gone glam with Oscar De La Renta spearheading its opulent rebirth. Seen encrusted with jewels/crystals, fringe hems and edges, as jacket for evening wear, worn with denim, and as a trench.

Expect to see it in store shelves where Oscar De La Renta, Monique Lhuillier, Perry Ellis, Sass & Bide and Pamela Roland are sold.

Fur Is As Strong As Ever

PETA might not like this news, but both established and emerging designers incorporated fur in their collections, be it as a full mink coat, a jacket, or as trim.

Zang Toi, Luca Luca, Ralph Rucci, Bill Blass, BCBG, Badgley Mischka, Peter Som, Jennifer Nicholson, Proenza Schouler, Carolina Herrera, Carmen Marc Valvo and Baby Phat … need I say more?

Ruffles

Ruffles here, ruffles there and ruffles everywhere! When designers go romantic, they go romantic!

Seen as cute and tiny as edges of blouses and skirt, and on gowns and dresses to add volume. Most creative use of ruffles was was seen at Y&Kei.

Corollary to ruffles are layering, as designers from Amanda Wakely, Anna Sui, B Michael, Atil Kutoglu, Badgley Mischka, BCBG and Carlos Miele layered fabrics from chiffon to leather.

Black Is Still ‘The’ Black

When Custo Dalmau of Custo Barcelona, known for his exuberant use of colors opted for black as the basic color palette, we knew that black will remain ‘black’ as a wardrobe staple.

Metallic & Glitter

Using silver or gold dusted fabric, or encrusting jewels/crystals on the cloth itself, and beading & sequins, it will all be glittery come fall and winter when the ladies go out for those parties and opera openings.

Seen at Zang Toi, Oscar De La Renta, and Badgley Mischka.
