New York Fashion Week Preview: Rodarte Rises From The West Coast
New York Fashion Week Spring 2006
By: Heide Winkenwerder
LOS ANGELES, Aug 26, 2005/ FW/ ---- Southern California, the land of sunshine and casual dressing; but that is changing fast as sisters Kate and Laura Mullavey, designing under the label ‘Rodarte’ become fashion darlings with their high fashion creations.
With editorials from Vogue and Harpers, plus Rodarte being carried at Barney’s, the Mullavey sisters have risen quickly as a name to watch.
With no formal training in design, Kate and Laura approach clothing with organic intuition. They founded Rodarte in 2004, choosing the name in honor of their mother and grandfather.
As if by fate, when they were naming their line, they came upon a 1930’s Pasadena directory and listed under the correct spelling of Rodarte, were their grandfather and his family members.
During the 1930s, Kate and Laura’s family had yet to become legal citizens, and thus, the original spelling of their last name, Rodarte, been printed. It seemed perfect that the man who came to Los Angeles from Mexico on a stagecoach during the revolution without speaking any English, a man who taught himself aeronautical science without ever going to school, would be remembered in their name.
And like their grandfather who excelled in his chosen field by teaching himself, the third generation Rodartes is doing the same, this time in the fashion world.
On Friday, September 9, 2005, at 9:00PM, Kate and Laura Mullavey debuts ‘Rodarte’ at the StyleLounge with a fashion installation.
