The Hardest Day
Paris Haute Couture Fall 2004
By Mari Davis

PARIS, Jul 7, 2004/ FW/ --- It’s the second day of the haute couture season, and the second to the last day of the Paris season. As usual, this is the hardest day for all of us at FashionWindows who covers the shows.

As expected, all of us are tired, but there are still two days of catwalk presentations ahead of us. And then, at this point in time, we already have a running list of tasks that we are already behind. This means we usually work our longest day, missing lunch and have a very late dinner.

But this time though, it was harder on me. I was feeling homesick! I have never had this sentiment before during the season. I’m usually very busy; I don’t have time for anything except to think about fashion.

Maybe it’s the rain. Maybe, it’s because I find it a chore to run either to Starbucks or McDonalds to get Internet access and upload all the articles and photos for publication on the web. Whatever it is, my thoughts keep on going back home.

Up at the crack of dawn, making sure that everything is ready for publication and then run to Starbucks for my coffee and Internet access before the first show at 12:30 in the afternoon. Having the whole morning just concentrating on postproduction helped out in keeping up with the long list of tasks.

One of the realities in working for a web publication is that readers expect the latest news from the catwalk almost instantaneously. It’s like working for a daily newspaper with an earlier deadline!

And because of the time difference, the U.S. expects today’s show online when they wake up or at least when they go to the office.

The reality check took away the homesickness I was feeling. And once again, I became a fashion editor who has deadlines, instead of a woman just missing her family back home.
